Houston, TX,   October 13, 2006 – Take A Musical Journey Around the World with Imani Winds when Da Camera of Houston presents a free concert for music lovers of all ages. In A Musical Journey Around the World, Imani Winds introduces young people to the wind instruments and performs short classical and world music pieces. There are interactive elements and a question-and-answer session with the musicians. The musical journey sets off from The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Brown Auditorium at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 4, 2006
The concert is the culmination of Da Camera’s annual Community Residency Project, a week-long residency with the ensemble in which they visit HISD elementary, middle and high schools.
The five accomplished musicians of Imani Winds joined forces in 1997 to expand the boundaries of the traditional wind quintet and explore the links between European, African and American music traditions. The name Imani, which means “faith” in Swahili, embodies this mission. In their time together, this young ensemble of African/Latin American heritage has established a distinct presence in the classical music world for dynamic playing, innovative programming, and inspirational outreach programs, which they have brought to communities throughout the country. Imani Winds are Valerie Coleman, flute; Toyin Spellman-Diaz, oboe; Mariam Adam, clarinet; Monica Ellis, bassoon and Jeff Scott, horn.
Da Camera of Houston’s Community Residency Project with Imani Winds is made possible by The JPMorgan Chase Foundation. Da Camera of Houston is a 2006/2007 recipient of a CMA Residency Partnership Program Grant with funding provided by the Chamber Music America Residency Endowment Fund. This project is also supported by Mid-America Arts Alliance with generous underwriting by the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, and foundations, corporations and individuals throughout Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.
