25-Oct-05 11:00 AM CST REBECCA MILLER NAMED HOUSTON SYMPHONY AMERICAN CONDUCTING FELLOWHouston, Texas - - Rebecca Miller, cited as one of “Four at the Forefront” in The Manchester Guardian’s recent article on women conductors, has been named the American Conducting Fellow at the Houston Symphony. Miller is the second such conductor to join the orchestra since the Houston Symphony was selected last season by the American Symphony Orchestra League as a host orchestra in the Conducting Fellows Program. “We’re really excited to welcome Rebecca to the Houston Symphony,” said Executive Director/CEO Matthew VanBesien, “not just as a great new talent on our conducting staff, but as someone that Hans Graf, the orchestra, staff and board will help mentor in her work here.” Most recently, Miller has served as Assistant Conductor with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and the Bard Festival in New York. She currently serves as Music Director of The New Professionals Orchestra in London, England, an ensemble she founded in 1999. Originally from California, Miller studied piano at the Oberlin Conservatory and conducting at the Northwestern University School of Music. After moving to London in 1999, she was chosen two years consecutively as the Junior Fellow in Conducting at the Royal College of Music. “I’m honored to have been invited to be the American Conducting Fellow at the Houston Symphony,” Miller said. “The Fellows Program provides the invaluable opportunity to work full-time with a prestigious orchestra, to gain experience in education work and to learn the inner workings of a large symphony orchestra both on and off the podium.” Miller is a member of the American Conducting Fellows Program, a national conductor training program developed and managed by the American Symphony Orchestra League. The program supports the musical and leadership development of exceptionally talented conductors in the early stages of their professional careers. It aims to improve the qualifications of American conductors to assume leadership roles as music directors of American orchestras. Funding for the American Conducting Fellows Program is provided by major grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. “As the role of the American music director has evolved, training the next generation of conductors has become a League priority,” said ASOL President and CEO Henry Fogel. “The American Conducting Fellows Program instills gifted young conductors with the kind of musical and practical knowledge and experience they will need to be the leaders of the future.” Miller makes her debut on the Houston Symphony podium conducting a Discoverer Concert on November 7.
